DENVER (CBS4)Finding love in Denver can be tough unless you know where to look. That's the theory of matchmaker Kris Kenny. Kenny sat down with CBS4 morning anchor Brooke Wagner for breakfast in the week leading up to Valentine's Day.

Kenny owns a matchmaking service aimed at a very specific clientele. "I really just had that niche and wanted to go after that professional group, very athletic, non-smoking," Kenny said. "I really stuck to my guns of who I was going to cater to."

Four years down the road she's responsible for eight marriages. That gives her a bit of expertise in matching up successful couples.

"I look for people who are going to work with me and have a good outlook," she said.

Kenny also said it's important to not to be too quick to judge from from the first date. "If there's no chemistry and the conversation was a struggle, it's tough," she said.

"But sometimes I've had people come back and say the conversation was a little tough but I thought he was a really great person, I will push them to go out again."

Kris Kenny and Bill Ward, partners in Kris Kenny Connections, 1616 17th St., Suite 478, Denver There comes a time for many startups when it seems prudent to move the files and paperwork off the dining room table and onto a real desk in a real office.

For Kris Kenny and Bill Ward, that time was last August. "We hired our first employee, and we didn't want to work out of Bill's home anymore. It was the next step of professionalism," Kenny said. "When we said we worked out of the house, everyone thought we must be a -really small business," Ward added. Kenny and Ward didn't want to cripple their 18-month-old matchmaking company with a high-priced rent check. So they moved into a 350-square-foot office adjacent to the historic Oxford Hotel in lower downtown. Not only is the space affordable - it rents for $650 a month, including high-speed Internet access - but it has the funky charm that can be found in a vintage building.

Extending the Date Line

Sherry Alpert never watches a movie twice. But this winter she made an exception to her rule: She headed back to the theater for a second viewing of "Something's Gotta Give," Hollywood's valentine to mature love. As a 50-ish public relations consultant who has been divorced for five years, she knows well the foibles, frustrations, and poignant humor of midlife dating, as played out on the screen by Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

After years of remaining largely in the shadows, midlife daters are getting their day in the sun. In addition to the Keaton-Nicholson romp, a play called "Bad Dates," about a 40-ish divorcee who is reentering the dating game, just ended a successful run in Boston. Even dating services and websites are beginning to target older clients. In Denver, a new matchmaking service, Classic Connections, caters specifically to the 50-and-over set. While younger singles want to marry and have a family, those in their 50s and beyond are typically more interested in long-term companionship, says founder Kris Kenny.

10 Smart First-Date Ideas for Singles 50+
By Sacha E. Cohen

There's no question that first dates can be nerve-wracking. What to wear? What to say? Where to go? All that uncertainty is compounded when it's not just a first date—but perhaps your first date in decades.

Older singles who haven't been "out there" for a while may feel more comfortable going on a group date or participating in group activities such as a wine tasting or a seminar. Successful first dates at any age should center on common interests or hobbies. By tailoring a first date to include a shared value, you immediately establish a connection, says Lowell Jay Arthur, author of Attracting Romance (LifeStar, 1992).

What to avoid? Movies. "You can't talk to the other person, so how are you supposed to get to know them?" says dating expert Kris Kenney, who runs her own Denver-based dating service. And of course, don't plan any overnight trips. "Exit plans are essential if you don't really know the person too well," she says.

When Kris Kenny tunes in to tonight's season opener of "Sex and the City," it will be as much to follow what Carrie Bradshaw and her pals are wearing as to follow what is happening with their romances.

"I definitely look at it to see what the trends are," said Kenny, who owns a dating service in Denver.

"The fact that the show is based in New York means that you see a lot of fashion, whether it's with the handbags, shoes or clothes that are coming out," Kenny said. "They put flair into every outfit.

Pricey matchmakers surge in Denver

Bill Ward crouched on one knee and watched two salesmen drape his client John Biallas with a heap of blue and gray shirts.

"He's going to have such a better look," whispered Ward, co-owner of Kris Kenny Connections, a Denver matchmaking service.

Ward spent a recent afternoon walking Biallas through a dating makeover: a new haircut, a facial and personalized shopping at retailer Hugo Boss. The goal: getting Biallas more dates. Will it happen? "Definitely," an enthusiastic Ward said. "It's so bad to say, because you're not a better person, not a nicer person, but you look better. And there's chemistry involved in dating."

While many businesses struggle to stay afloat in the tough economy,

Ward has found one thing people will pay for in good times and in bad: The Prospect of Love.

"The 40-year-old software salesman is casually dapper in a short-sleeved, V-neck pullover. He stares out the cafe window, rests his bulky forearms in his lap and explains why he joined Denver's latest dating service, Kris Kenny Connections."

"She's a modern-day Dolly Levi who makes matchmaking easy by befriending clients before setting them up. She and her partner, Bill Ward, 29, have generated a dating pool that's full of people just like them: worldly, outgoing, nice-looking city dwellers."

"Denver's newest matchmaking service, Kris Kenny Connections, kicks off with a party tonight. Kenny says it's a service for people who don't need one - successful, attractive, active. After a 1 1/2 hour interview, Kenny says she'll know your match. Even for me? Look it up at www.kriskennyconnections.com."

"Kenny and Ward have lived in Denver for some time now, and when I asked them why they were beginning a matchmaking service they explained that their combined twenty years in Denver has led them to be very active in the community. What they have found, like so many, is that people are tired, tired, tired, (did I say tired) of relying on bars, friends, the internet to meet people of like minds. I was able to hound Kris and Bill for only a few minutes, as the crowd kept increasing, and the loft itself was buzzing with people who were really excited to be there, and to be part of something like "Kris Kenny Connections." (KKC)"

"In order to join Kenny and Ward set standards that they feel will fit in the very niche they are determined to create. One does not merely fill out an application; The potential candidate will meet one on one with Kenny or Ward and go through a "who, what, when, why, where set of questions, that can specify who the person is, and who they are looking for in a mate. Based upon a personal and intimate interview, Kenny and Ward decipher if a person will not only be a good match with the company's standards, but also with the clientele they are upholding"
